Day 03 - Provence and Van Gogh...

We docked in Marseille, France his morning.  It was a little foggy early but turned out to be a beautiful day.  We took a day-long bus trip to Arles and St. Rémy to visit some of the places where Van Gogh lived and painted. The Captain hosted a cocktail hour that we attended followed by dinner in the Grand Dining Room.  We set sail this evening for our next port which is Monte Carlo, Monaco...

The courtyard garden and fountain at the Hotel Dieu in Arles.  This was where

Van Gogh convalesced after cutting off his ear... ouch!

While convalescing, Van Gogh continued to paint.  This poster shows

Van Gogh's painting of the very same garden and courtyard...

Angela striking a pose at the very same fountain!

Roman amphitheater in Arles, remarkably well preserved Interior arches and vaults.

The Amphitheater.  Per our guide, city still uses it for special events...

Walking through the streets of Arles, lots of yummy-looking pastries... ... and breads...

... and cheeses!

St. Paul Psych Hospital in St. Rémy where Van Gogh was treated... Interior courtyard garden at St. Paul’s...

Wall poster at St. Paul, highlighting Van Gogh's stay there...

Van Gogh was apparently quite prolific during his stay, here

a painting of one of groves outside the walls of St. Paul.
