Day 12 - Thessaloniki, on the Greek mainland...

Docked in Thessaloniki (the second largest city in Greece) this morning. Took the “city highlights” tour which included the White Tower, the Archeological Museum, the old city walls, and the St. Demetrios church. Back on the ship for a quick workout, followed by tea and a little packing. Planning on dining el fresco again on the back terrace. Leaving here in the late afternoon en route to our next to last stop - the city of Volos...

View of the harbor area looking south. A little hazy today but, per our tour guide,

on a clear day you can see Mt. Olympus...

Thessaloniki Harbor promenade... The "White Tower" which, as you can see, is not really white.

Big statue of Alexander the Great on the harbor promenade...

Per our tour guide this statue is relatively new and is an attempt by the government

to reassert their claim to “Macedonia”-ness in response to the

Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia trying to usurp the name...

At the Thessaloniki Archeological Museum, note yet another

reference to Macedonia, one senses a trend...

Some of previously mentioned gold, there was a lot...

View of what is left of the medieval city walls in the old town district of Thessaloniki.

Hagios Demetrios, Greek Orthodox temple or church in Thessaloniki devoted to St. Demetrios.

It happened to be his name-day holiday when we visited so lots of festivities transpiring around the area...
